Frequently Asked Questions

What are the types of aggregate tests?

Tests to check Product Specification requirements are met, for example:-
Aggregates for concrete: BS EN 12620: 2002
Aggregate for Bituminous Materials: BS EN 13043:2002
Specification for Highway Works Requirements

What is the British standard for aggregate testing?

BS EN 933 series: tests for general properties
BS EN 1097: tests for physical & mechanical properties.
BS EN 1367: test for thermal and weathering properties.
BS EN 1744 tests for chemical properties.

Miscellaneous tests carried out on aggregates:-
Frost Heave: BS 812 – Part 124: 2009.
Angle of Internal friction: SHW series 600 clause 636 & 639 (BS 1377 – part 7)

How is aggregate size determined?

Particle size distribution test: This test is used to determine the proportion of particles of different sizes within a particular aggregate product or sample using a series of interlocking sieves with apertures that decrease in size from top to bottom.  Following drying and weighing (and washing if necessary), the sample is loaded onto the uppermost sieve with the largest apertures and the whole stack is shaken. The amount of sample retained on each sieve is weighed separately and the cumulative percentage passing each sieve is calculated. The cumulative percentage passing each sieve is then reported and checked against a specification limit, if applicable.
