Landfill Clay Liner Testing

Properly engineered clay liners are vital for preventing contaminants from leaking into the environment from landfills.

Our experts, working from our soil testing laboratory, conduct thorough and reliable landfill clay liner testing services. These include:

  • Hydraulic Conductivity Testing - We determine the permeability of clay liners, ensuring they meet regulatory standards for effective containment.
  • Compaction Testing - Our laboratory assesses the density and compaction of clay liners to guarantee their structural integrity.
  • Material Characterisation - We provide a thorough analysis of the materials used in clay liners, ensuring they are suited for their intended purpose.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the meaning of soil testing?

Soils are tested for a wide range of properties dependent upon their final application and end use.  These groups of properties include tests for shape, size, strength (stress), durability, compressibility, permeability and chemical resistance.

The test results provide information for design and construction, for classification purposes and to assess compliance with specifications to ensure the material is suitable and safe for its intended use.

What are geotechnical tests for soil?

In the UK, BS 1377: 1990 was the formative series of test methods for Geotechnical testing of soils. In recent years BS EN ISO 17892 series has partially replaced BS 1377. These test methods comprehensively cover a multitude of tests required to assess the following parameters:-
Classification Tests
Chemical and Electro Chemical Tests
Compaction-related results
Compressibility, permeability and durability tests
Consolidation and permeability tests in hydraulic cells.
Shear strength tests (total stress)
Shear strength tests (effective stress)
In-situ tests (density, compaction, strength etc)

What is typically included in a geotechnical soil report?

A typical Geotechnical report will include the following information: -

  •  Date of sampling and testing and name of sampler.
  • Identification of sample and sampling location, sample depth, borehole or trial pit number, if applicable.
  • Visual description of soil type.
  • Sample type; undisturbed specimen, disturbed sample.
  • Specimen dimensions, if applicable.
  • Specimen water content.
  • Initial and final bulk density, if applicable.
  • Testing conditions subjected during testing as required by the specific test method.
  • Specific characteristics of test equipment (critical dimensions, volumes, etc), if required.
  • Test results to the accuracy specified in the test method.
  • Any other information that would be important for interpreting the test results.
