Polished Stone Value (PSV) Testing Services
Ensure safe road surfaces with Celtest’s independent Polished Stone Value (PSV) testing services. Our laboratory provides accurate, standards-compliant testing to assess the skid resistance performance of aggregates used in highway construction.
PSV testing measures an aggregate’s resistance to polishing under traffic, helping engineers and contractors select materials suited to high-stress areas such as junctions, roundabouts and braking zones.
PSV Testing You Can Rely On
Celtest carries out PSV testing in accordance with BS EN 1097-8:2020.
Our testing provides reliable data to support:
- Aggregate selection for skid-resistant surfacing
- Compliance with highways specifications
- Performance assessment of primary and recycled aggregates
All testing is undertaken within controlled laboratory conditions to ensure repeatability and accuracy.
How PSV Testing Supports Your Project
PSV testing provides measurable data to help you:
- Evaluate skid resistance performance of aggregates
- Select suitable materials for high-risk traffic areas
- Support specification compliance and approvals
- Assess long-term polishing resistance under traffic loading
- Reduce safety risks associated with reduced surface friction
PSV Testing Method
We follow a structured two-stage process in line with BS EN standards.
Step 1: Accelerated Polishing
- Aggregates are subjected to mechanical polishing using an Accelerated Polishing Machine (APM)
- Abrasives simulate the action of vehicle tyres over time
- Replicates long-term in-service wear conditions
Step 2: Friction Measurement
- A Pendulum Friction Tester measures the resulting surface friction
- Results are used to calculate the Polished Stone Value (PSV)
- Provides a standardised indicator of skid resistance
Why PSV Testing is Important
Selecting aggregates with the correct PSV is essential for both performance and safety.
- Skid Resistance - Higher PSV values are required for high-friction surfacing in areas with increased braking or turning forces
- Compliance - Supports adherence to highways and infrastructure specifications

Frequently Asked Questions
What is PSV testing?
PSV testing measures an aggregate’s resistance to polishing, which affects skid resistance on road surfaces.
Which standard do you follow?
We test in accordance with BS EN 1097-8:2020.
Why is PSV important for highways?
It helps ensure sufficient skid resistance, particularly in high-risk areas such as junctions and roundabouts.
Can you test recycled aggregates?
Yes. We test both primary and recycled aggregates to assess performance and compliance.
How do I arrange PSV testing?
Contact our team with your requirements and we will confirm the appropriate testing schedule.
